Selling online
Do you still need a store if you sell on Instagram and WhatsApp?
August 18, 2026
Plenty of businesses run entirely on Instagram and WhatsApp and make real money. So the question is fair: why bother with a store at all?
What social does better
Genuinely better — discovery and trust. Nothing beats a reel for reaching people who have never heard of you, and a real conversation converts better than any product page. You should keep doing it.
What it does badly
- You do not own the relationship. No email list, no phone numbers, no way to reach your buyers if the account goes.
- Orders get lost. Multiple chats, no record of who paid, screenshots as receipts.
- It does not scale. Fifty DMs a day is a full-time job before you have done anything else.
- No numbers. You cannot tell which product sells best or which post produced sales.
- You look informal. Some buyers will not send money to a personal account.
The account you don't control
This is the one that ends businesses. Accounts get hacked, mass-reported or restricted with no warning and no useful appeal. If that account was your entire storefront and customer list, you start again from nothing.
Borrow the audience. Own the relationship.
How to use both
Social is the top of the funnel. The store is where the transaction happens and the customer data lands.
- Post on social as you do now
- Link to your store for anything purchasable
- Let checkout capture the email or phone automatically
- Keep answering DMs — but send the link rather than repeating details
The cost of doing this is a link in your bio and half an hour to set up. Free stores exist precisely so this is not a decision that needs a budget.
